i am sorry that he could not be here with us. every manifestation of our state, whether it is the people who vote, local, regional authorities to participate, elected officials, everyone agrees that this was a priority. when the secretary says we have our act together, mr. secretary, we have been ready for a long time. what made such a difference, what tipped it over, of course, was the vision and leadership of president barack obama and the courage to go forward with this american reinvestment and recovery act which has saved or created millions of jobs, and now so many more in our state. we have been the bastion of creativity and the entrepreneurial thinking. we have embraced what is possible in technology and science, clean energy, and essential to all of that, under george miller's leadership, education. california, in our view, has always led the way. our great city has led the charge to the future of prosperity founded in the drive, determination, and the spirit of our workers. i, too, want to salute the building trade for

who helped us get a permit for this. i told people that the cost of putting something up like this cost the city about the cost of a billboard for one month, and they had a greater ability to create community and space, and it has been a fabulous addition to the port of san francisco. people will talk about this rocket ship forever. the next person we have is our district supervisor, david chiu. when david first came to the board of supervisors, he had a conversation with the cultural affairs director for the city and county of san francisco, and he made art in san francisco a priority. he wanted to make sure the money we were spending was spent on artists from the bay area. it was very important to him that this happened. as many of you may or may not know, san franciscans -- san francisco is one of the city with the most artists per capita. our government agencies spend more money on arts than any other government agency per- capita, and the foundations that work in san francisco spend more of a percentage of their mon

it had enabled us to help us continue to hire and meet demand. we currently have 12 food employees working with us now. now, they are currently mentoring other employees to follow in their footsteps. we would really like the program to continue because it would allow small business owners like myself the ability to take risk and continue to invest. also, the taxpayers, the best way to rescue the economy is by giving jobs to rescue people on main street. looking at various other progress on by stimulus, from my research, this is by far the most effective way to get people back onto the street, on to the payroll, and i want to again thank mayor newsom and trent for their leadership because that is a type of innovation that as a taxpayer, we see on these issues, which is the kind of innovation that makes america the country it is today. now, mayor newsom: what really caught my attention was that he did not want to take the risk of hiring additional employees in the hopes that the company would grow. jobs now allowed him to hire additional employees
